The best places to visit in Türkiye are spread across a country too large to rush. Choose two or three regions, leave room for transfers and build the trip around your interests rather than collecting every famous photograph.
Cities and cultural landmarks
1. Istanbul's historic peninsula
Choose Sultanahmet for layered Byzantine and Ottoman history. Give major monuments separate time slots and follow the current religious-site and ticket rules; this suits history lovers and first-time city explorers.
2. The Bosphorus
A scheduled ferry or properly licensed cruise provides a different view of the city. Check the route and boarding pier rather than assuming every boat is a sightseeing tour; couples and photographers may prefer softer daylight.
3. Ankara
The capital offers a useful introduction to the Republic and Anatolian history. Include it when your route supports a proper museum visit rather than treating it as a compulsory stop between distant regions.
Archaeology and distinctive landscapes
4. Cappadocia
Rock formations, settlements and historic religious spaces reward more than a single balloon photograph. Book walks or flights through appropriate operators; balloon operations are weather-dependent and never guaranteed.
5. Ephesus
The archaeological site suits visitors interested in the ancient Mediterranean. Arrive prepared for exposed walking, check ticket inclusions and add shade and rest rather than rushing through midday heat.
6. Pamukkale and Hierapolis
Treat the landscape and archaeology as related but distinct experiences. Follow conservation routes and footwear instructions; water flow and accessible areas may differ from promotional photographs.
7. Safranbolu
Historic streets and traditional houses suit a slower overnight stop. Wear shoes for uneven surfaces, respect occupied homes and compare local food and crafts rather than making it only a quick photo detour.
Coast and regional experiences
8. Antalya and its surroundings
Combine an old-town session with coast or archaeology according to the season. Families should compare beach access and transfer times, not assume every hotel is near every attraction.
9. Bodrum and the Aegean coast
Choose a coastal base for boat trips, dining and relaxed days. Confirm the season and ferry or charter availability; a summer-party image does not describe every month or neighbourhood.
10. The Black Sea region
Green landscapes and regional food provide a contrast to the Mediterranean. Weather, distances and mountain access require a focused route; nature travellers should use suitable guides and check conditions.
Practical first-trip advice
We suggest Istanbul plus one other region for a week, or a longer route with rest days for two weeks. Check current entry requirements, transport schedules, local conditions and your travel insurer's cover before paying.
Use our Türkiye budget guide and hidden gems and food trail to adapt the route. No single season is best for the whole country: match city, coast and mountain plans to their own weather.
