Moving to Oman starts with the reason you are legally entitled to live there. Employment, joining family and qualifying investment involve different evidence and permissions; arriving as a visitor does not automatically create a right to work.

Use this guide to identify the route before arranging shipping, a long lease or school fees.

Short visits and exploratory trips

Oman's entry rules include nationality-dependent visitor options and conditional short-stay exemptions. Use the Royal Oman Police guidance linked through the Foreign Ministry to check your exact passport and circumstances.

A visitor permission has a purpose, duration and conditions. Do not assume that a short visit can always be converted into residence inside Oman or that working remotely is automatically authorised.

Employment: the employer-led route

For ordinary employment, the employer arranges the relevant labour permission and work visa process. The official work visa service requires identity, work-permit and medical documentation.

Get a written offer and clarify the legal employer, job title, salary, probation, accommodation arrangements and insurance. A recruitment promise is not the same as an issued work permission.

Before accepting an offer

  • Verify the employer and the actual employment contract.
  • Check whether the occupation needs professional recognition.
  • Ask which medical examinations and attestations apply to your nationality.
  • Confirm who pays government, recruitment and relocation costs.
  • Do not start work merely because you have entered on a visit permission.

Family joining

Oman's official family-joining service covers eligible dependants under the relevant sponsor conditions. Relationship evidence, the sponsor's status and supporting records must match the application.

Check current age, housing, income and document requirements with the authority rather than relying on an old salary threshold copied from another website. Marriage and birth records may require attestation or translation.

A dependent residence does not automatically authorise employment. Investigate work permission separately if a family member intends to take a job.

Investors and Golden Residency

Oman's official portal describes a ten-year Golden Residency programme through qualifying routes. These are distinct from simply registering an inexpensive company.

Read our business setup and investor residence guide before comparing packages. Confirm that the investment type and evidence qualify, not just that the promoter uses the word “golden”.

Property, study and other cases

Property-related residence depends on the property and the applicable legal route; purchasing any home anywhere is not a universal entitlement. Obtain confirmation before signing a purchase agreement for immigration purposes.

Students should coordinate with their recognised institution and the relevant authorities. Do not assume that another Gulf country's freelancer, retirement or digital-nomad product also exists in Oman on identical terms.

A practical residence sequence

1. Confirm eligibility before travel

Ask whether entry clearance must be issued before arrival, whether an in-country process is allowed and who submits the application.

2. Prepare verified documents

Keep passport copies, photographs, applicable qualifications, employment or investment records and relationship documents ready. Check validity and attestation requirements early.

3. Complete medical and identity requirements

Follow the instructions for your actual category and nationality. Keep copies of approvals and receipts, and confirm the deadline for identity or residence formalities after arrival.

4. Set up everyday life

Arrange housing, utilities, banking, healthcare and school places only with a realistic understanding of your approved status. A bank or landlord may require additional records.

Costs and timing

Budget separately for official fees, medical checks, document processing, professional help, insurance, travel and housing deposits. Do not confuse a single visa fee with the full cost of relocating.

Approval times vary with the application. Avoid non-refundable commitments based only on an agent's estimated completion date.

Final checks before moving

Verify official conditions again before departure, keep lawful status throughout the process and understand renewal and cancellation responsibilities. Our Oman country guide introduces the cultural setting.
