The best places to visit in Jordan combine archaeology, living culture, religious heritage and very different landscapes. Give major walks their own days and build a route that respects distance, weather and current local conditions.
Cities, archaeology and heritage
1. Amman
Start with a manageable city route and a museum or archaeological stop. It suits curious urban travellers; hills and traffic make a realistic walking plan more useful than a long checklist.
2. Jerash
The ancient urban remains reward visitors interested in Roman-period history. Plan for exposed walking and choose cooler hours, with water and a guide if you want deeper interpretation.
3. Petra
Allow a full day or more for the archaeological landscape rather than only the Treasury. Check ticket category, path closures and fitness requirements before planning additional climbs.
4. Madaba
Mosaic heritage and the town's streets make a good cultural stop. Check individual church or museum access and respect services; it suits travellers who enjoy detailed craftsmanship.
Religious and reflective places
5. Mount Nebo
Visit for religious tradition and the landscape, allowing for the site's current route and visibility. It pairs naturally with Madaba, but do not promise distant views in every weather condition.
6. Bethany Beyond the Jordan
The Baptism Site calls for a respectful guided or authorised visit. Confirm tickets, transport and last entry; ceremonies require separate arrangements.
Nature and coast
7. Wadi Rum
Choose a licensed responsible operator for desert exploration and an agreed camp standard. It suits landscape lovers, but vehicles, hiking, night temperatures and accessibility require planning.
8. Dana
Nature walks and community stays can offer a slower experience. Book a suitable route and guide where required, checking weather and fitness rather than assuming every trail is an easy stroll.
9. Dead Sea
Choose a confirmed access point with appropriate facilities. Follow local bathing guidance, avoid swallowing water or diving and consider personal health needs; a leisure float is not a medical treatment.
10. Aqaba
The Red Sea coast can add a relaxed finish, with swimming or a properly operated marine activity. Check sea conditions, equipment, insurance and reef-protection rules before booking.
A suggested first itinerary
We suggest Amman and the north, followed by Petra and Wadi Rum, then either the Dead Sea or Aqaba according to time. A week or more allows a gentler pace; a shorter trip needs fewer stops.
Check passport-specific entry, current travel conditions, transport and insurance. Our Petra guide, Baptism Site guide and budget plan help turn the list into a workable journey.
