Petra is much larger than the Treasury photograph that introduces it to most travellers. Plan for a substantial archaeological landscape, uneven paths and a return walk, and the visit becomes more rewarding and less exhausting.
What makes Petra extraordinary?
The Nabataean city combines rock-cut architecture with the practical systems of a trading settlement. Look beyond façades to routes, water management and the way the site fits its landscape.
The Siq approach and Treasury are memorable, but they are not the whole visit. Decide which further areas fit your mobility, available daylight and energy rather than committing to every climb in advance.
Tickets and Jordan Pass
Use PDTRA's official Petra ticket channel or the visitor centre. Published categories distinguish visitors staying in Jordan from non-accommodated day visitors, with different multi-day options and eligibility evidence.
For orientation, the official ticket information lists JOD 50 for a one-day accommodated visitor and JOD 90 for a non-accommodated one-day visitor; confirm current category and price before paying. Jordan Pass may be useful for eligible itineraries, but it is not a visa and its fee-waiver conditions must be checked directly.
Petra by Night is a separate event rather than an automatic inclusion in a daytime ticket or Jordan Pass. Verify its current schedule, price and daytime-ticket requirements independently; old event prices and days can remain online after changes.
Choose a realistic route
- Begin early enough for your chosen walk and the current closing arrangements.
- Allow time for the entrance-to-Siq approach and return journey.
- Add longer climbs only if weather, fitness and daylight support them.
- Ask at the visitor centre about closed paths, guides and accessible assistance.
Do not follow unofficial “secret viewpoint” directions across barriers. A promised photograph is not worth an unsafe climb or damage to the site.
Heat, weather and responsible visiting
Carry water, sun protection and suitable footwear. Weather-related closures and flash-flood precautions can override a planned itinerary; follow park staff rather than trying to enter during a closure.
If considering animal transport, assess welfare and operator arrangements carefully and do not overload or encourage mistreatment. A licensed guide can add context without requiring you to use an animal.
Photography without pressure
Use marked public routes, keep entrances clear and ask before portraits. Drones and professional shoots need their own permissions; an ordinary admission ticket does not grant them.
Stay nearby and leave time
Wadi Musa can be a practical base for an early start and a less rushed second day. Combine Petra with Jordan's first-time route and budget planning, allowing a separate transfer day toward Wadi Rum or Amman where needed.
