Relocating to Bahrain is a sequence of approvals, not simply a flight and a long hotel booking. Match your intended activity with a valid residence route before making irreversible work, school or housing commitments.

Short visits are not work permission

Use Bahrain's official eVisa service to check your passport, travel purpose, documents, entry conditions and permitted stay. Eligibility differs by nationality and circumstances; another GCC residence card does not create the same rights as GCC citizenship.

Do not begin employment on a visit visa. A residence category and authorisation to perform a job can also be separate, so confirm both where relevant.

Employer-sponsored work

For many newcomers, an eligible employer applies through LMRA. Check the genuine written contract, occupation, salary, accommodation terms and responsibility for the official process.

Follow the approved medical, entry, identity and residence steps applicable to the case. Avoid agents promising work without proper permits or asking you to rely on an unrelated person's documents.

Family residence

Eligible residents can explore sponsorship for qualifying family members under current conditions. Relationship certificates, passports, income, accommodation and insurance evidence may be needed; a dependent's stay does not automatically include employment rights.

Investor and self-sponsored routes

Business owners and other qualifying applicants should review NPRA's current categories and conditions. Registration of a company alone does not prove that the shareholder qualifies for a particular residence permit.

Golden Residency: check the exact category

The programme includes eligible professionals, property owners, retirees and qualifying talent. Each category has different evidence and approval requirements; use the official programme and NPRA rather than a generic “buy any property” advertisement.

Property guidance needs particular care: the programme website lists BHD 130,000, while an older national service page lists BHD 200,000. Confirm the current rule in writing before a purchase. Long-term residence should not be described as citizenship or automatic permission for every type of work.

Documents to organise

  • Passport and current immigration records.
  • Attested marriage, birth or educational records where requested.
  • Employment, pension, business or property evidence for the chosen category.
  • Medical, insurance, housing and financial documents required by the authority.

The exact checklist depends on the route. Translations and legalisation can take time; check acceptable formats before paying for them.

Costs and a practical landing plan

Ask for official application, permit, medical and identity-document fees separately from agent charges. Budget temporary accommodation, deposits, school places, transport and renewals as well.

Keep temporary arrangements flexible until approval. The fact that a service page gives an estimated processing time does not guarantee that a complex or incomplete case will finish in that period.

Read our Bahrain business guide if incorporating and the country guide for daily-life context. Obtain advice specific to your nationality, household and proposed activity before committing money.
