How to Move to Israel Legally: Entry, Work, Study and Family Pathways

Moving to Israel starts with identifying a lawful purpose of stay, not with booking a long apartment lease. Tourism, work, study, family processes and immigration are distinct routes with different evidence and conditions.

Short visits: visa or ETA-IL?

Eligible visa-exempt travellers use the official ETA-IL system. The approval is a travel authorisation, not an entitlement to enter, live indefinitely or work; border authorities decide admission and the permitted stay.

The official guidance describes visits of up to 90 days and an authorisation valid for up to two years or passport expiry, whichever comes first. It lists a NIS 25 charge. Check the live portal for your nationality and documents; travellers who need a visa must use the applicable visa process instead.

Employment: B/1 and the employer's role

The relevant employer must establish the appropriate permit route, and the worker needs the correct visa or status before employment begins. A tourist entry cannot be treated as a general job-start permission.

Ask who files each stage, what occupation and employer the permission covers, what happens on a job change and which costs are the employer's responsibility. Check regulated-profession recognition separately from immigration approval.

Study: A/2

Students should work through the admitting institution and consular mission for the correct documentation. Admission to a course is not a substitute for the visa, and student status should not be assumed to include unrestricted work rights.

Budget for tuition, housing, insurance, living expenses and any required financial evidence. Ask how dependants and re-entry are handled before the family buys tickets.

Family and immigration routes

Family-based applications depend on the relationship, sponsor's status and the applicable procedure. Marriage or a family connection should not be presented as immediate automatic permanent residence.

Investors and entrepreneurs

Owning an Israeli company is not itself a residence category. The B/5 investor procedure has specific nationality and treaty conditions; it is not a broadly available Golden Visa in the Gulf sense.

• Apply through the correct authority and wait for the necessary approval before beginning work or studies.
• Record expiry, re-entry and renewal conditions after arrival.

Police records, civil certificates, educational documents or financial evidence may be required depending on the route. There is no single checklist that fits every applicant.

Practical relocation decisions

Confirm insurance, accommodation deposits, schooling and transport after checking the legal pathway and current security advice. Keep emergency funds and flexible travel arrangements. A consultant's optimistic timeline should not be the basis for resigning a job or signing a non-refundable annual lease.
