Moving to Jordan requires more than booking a long hotel stay. The right route depends on why you are moving, your nationality and whether you intend to work, study, join family or support yourself without employment.

Start with the purpose of your move

A short exploratory visit can help you compare neighbourhoods, schools and transport. It is not a substitute for the permission required to live or work in the country.

Check entry eligibility through the Ministry of Interior before buying non-refundable travel. Requirements can depend on nationality, existing residence elsewhere and the point of entry; another traveller's experience is not a legal entitlement.

Employment: secure the correct permissions

Ask the prospective employer which work and residence procedures apply to your occupation and nationality. Establish who pays the official charges, prepares documents and tracks renewal dates.

A job offer alone does not authorise work. Obtain a clear explanation of when paid duties may legally begin, and keep copies of the approved paperwork rather than relying solely on an agent's assurance.

Study and family routes

The Ministry of Interior provides separate study and family/follower residence services. For study, coordinate with the admitting institution on enrolment evidence and the applicable process.

For family residence, ask which relationships qualify and what sponsor evidence is required. Prepare marriage or birth records only after confirming the legalisation and translation requirements for the issuing country.

Self-funded and investor pathways

The ministry lists a workless residence service linked to a bank deposit. Confirm the current financial evidence, validity, permitted activities and renewal conditions directly; do not treat it as permission to take local employment.

Entrepreneurs should evaluate business licensing and residence separately. Ownership of a company or property does not, by itself, establish that every applicant qualifies for a particular residence category.

A practical document checklist

  • Passport and compliant photographs; confirm validity rules for your application.
  • Evidence matching the purpose: employment approvals, enrolment, family relationship or financial records.
  • Legalised and translated overseas documents where requested.
  • Local address, contact information and any category-specific supporting evidence.

Do not commission expensive translations until the receiving authority confirms the format. Names, dates and passport details should match across documents.

Plan your first month

Choose temporary accommodation while you inspect longer leases. Budget for deposits, transport, healthcare arrangements, utilities and document appointments in addition to visa-related charges.

Check current official travel advice, insurance cover and flight availability shortly before departure. Regional circumstances can change, and no travel guide can guarantee individual safety or entry approval.

Avoid common mistakes

Do not overstay while an application is being considered unless the authority confirms your lawful position. Keep receipts and submission references, and ask how a change of employer or circumstances affects your permission.
