Türkiye connects very different landscapes and histories: Istanbul's waterways, Anatolian towns, archaeological sites, mountain regions and Mediterranean coasts. A rewarding trip begins by choosing a region rather than treating the whole country as one short city break.

Essential orientation

  • Ankara is the capital; Istanbul is the largest city and a major cultural and commercial centre.
  • The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY); check current prices and exchange rates when budgeting.
  • Turkish is the official language. English availability varies outside major visitor centres.
  • Türkiye is not a GCC country. Its immigration, tax and company rules need their own assessment.

A layered history

Ancient Anatolian civilisations, Greek and Roman settlements, the Byzantine world, Seljuk traditions and the Ottoman Empire all left distinct legacies. Avoid reducing every old monument to one historical period.

The Republic was founded in 1923 under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the current president as checked for this guide; leadership details should be rechecked when using the article in future research.

Where to begin

Choose Istanbul for dense urban history, Cappadocia for distinctive landscapes, the Aegean for archaeology and coastal towns, or the Mediterranean for a slower seaside holiday. Distances make a one-week trip covering every region impractical.

Our suggestion is three or four nights in Istanbul plus one additional region if you have a week or more. Allow transfer days rather than counting an arrival evening as a full sightseeing day.

Culture and festivals

Tea, coffee, neighbourhood markets and long meals are useful ways to experience daily life. Religious and regional traditions vary; ask before photographing people and follow each mosque's dress and visitor arrangements.

Republic Day is 29 October. Ramadan and the religious holidays move through the solar calendar; check the year's dates, public-holiday demand and changed hours before booking transport.

Eat beyond the familiar kebab

Try a regional breakfast, soup, vegetable dishes, pide or gözleme, and a small sweet alongside coffee. Coastal fish, southeastern cooking and Black Sea traditions are not interchangeable menus.

Ask about nuts, dairy, sesame and other allergens. Street food is part of the experience, but choose busy established vendors and compare displayed prices before ordering.

Practical travel planning

Spring and autumn often suit city walks, while coastal and mountain seasons differ. Winter can be cold or snowy inland; summer heat can make archaeological sites tiring.

Use official transport operators, check which Istanbul airport your flight uses and allow realistic connection time. Visa eligibility depends on passport and purpose, not simply where you live. Read our first-time Türkiye highlights and budget guide before finalising the route.
