The best places to visit in Cyprus are not all beaches, and they do not all belong in one hurried week. Match archaeological sites, towns and landscapes to your interests, then choose a route that leaves time to enjoy them.
Archaeology and history
- Kato Pafos Archaeological Park: mosaics and urban remains make this a strong choice for history lovers and curious families. Visit with time for interpretation and use our Paphos visitor guide for published ticket and timing details.
- Kourion: an archaeological landscape with a memorable theatre setting above the coast. It suits visitors who enjoy combining architecture with a broader view; bring sun protection and check access arrangements.
- Choirokoitia: prehistoric settlement remains offer a different chapter from Roman villas or medieval buildings. Choose it for archaeology and early settlement history, not as a substitute for a beach stop.
Towns and waterfronts
- Nicosia's old city: museums, streets and architecture suit walkers interested in contemporary as well as historic life. The divided city requires care around the Green Line; crossing arrangements are separate from an ordinary city walk.
- Larnaca: the seafront, Saint Lazarus area and nearby cultural sites can create a manageable base. It works well for travellers who prefer fewer accommodation changes, with specific transfers planned for outlying attractions.
- Limassol's waterfront: an urban coastal setting for a walk, dining and city-based stays. Public areas and private venues differ, so check access and prices rather than assuming every waterfront facility is free.
Villages and mountain culture
- Lefkara: known for a lace-making tradition and village craftsmanship. It suits slower exploration; ask about provenance when buying and respect homes and working shops.
- Troodos painted churches: important religious art within a mountain landscape. Select a small number, confirm opening arrangements and follow worship and conservation rules.
Nature and the coast
- Cape Greco: coastal scenery for landscape-minded visitors when conditions permit. Follow marked routes, keep back from cliff edges and do not turn an attractive photograph into advice to jump or swim at an unassessed spot.
- Akamas-area landscapes: nature and coastal interests reward responsible route selection. Confirm current access, trail conditions and restrictions; a rental car is not automatically authorised or suitable for rough tracks.
Choose the season for the activity
Spring and autumn often suit cultural touring and walking. Summer can work for a beach-focused stay with heat precautions; mountain winter conditions require a different plan and may affect roads or trails.
Never assume wildlife, a boat departure or a seasonal attraction is guaranteed. Check the operator, weather and cancellation terms before making a long transfer.
Practical first-trip checklist
- Start with a suitable arrival point and confirm passport and visa requirements.
- Choose one or two bases and compare buses, taxis and car hire realistically.
- Allow for left-side driving, parking and rural journey times.
- Confirm accessibility, religious-site rules and admission separately.
Our Cyprus budget guide and village food trails help turn a landmark list into a balanced itinerary. For most first visits, doing fewer places well is more rewarding than collecting ten rushed photographs.
